Student Award

On behalf of the organizing committee, we are pleased to advise that we will offer a limited number of student awards towards participation at the Symposium on Tropical Cyclone Risk in a Changing Climate (May 31-June 4, 2025, at the JW Marriot, Clearwater). Presentations by students will be via poster only. They will be presenting alongside other scientists and those from industry.

The main objective of the Symposium is to foster communication between scientists, engineers, and practitioners to increase understanding of and find improved ways to deal with tropical cyclone risks. This symposium differs from traditional conferences in allotting more time for each talk and for discussion, so as to provide deeper examinations of the topics. Further discussions will take place over daily organized group lunches and welcome and farewell dinners.

Students should submit an abstract by November 15th, 2024 and awardees will be notified by December 8th, 2024. Please note that awardees will be notified and the award committee will directly put the award amount towards the registration or hotel fee. The award funds are contingent on full participation.

APPLY FOR AWARD when submitting abstract:
Please go to Abstract Submission where you can submit the abstract and apply for the award.

There will be additional awards given out at the Symposium which will largely depend on the quality and relevance of the poster.

Please note you will need a letter of application for the award (up to 1 page max) and a letter of recommendation from your advisor noting that you will have a piece of work completed by the conference date which is ready to present. The application and recommendation letter should also discuss the relevance of your work to the theme of the symposium. The recommendation letter should also discuss the need for funding and if there is any partial funding available which may cover flight and either registration or hotel.

If provided an award, you will be responsible for travel to and from the hotel, and other expenses not included in the award. Students may be given an award which covers the hotel room. In which case, students will be paired with another student of the same gender in a room with two beds. Please contact Dr. Jennifer Collins (collinsjm@usf.edu) if you have special room needs other than this at the time of abstract submission and request for funding.
